Day 13: Queenstown to Dunedin

This morning, we woke up at 6:30, had breakfast at 7, and then we were on the coach at 7:45 to drive to Dunedin. On the way, we stopped for our included shotover jet boat ride. We were warned that it would be cold, but it was SO much colder than I expected it to be. It ended up being awesome, though! I didn't expect to enjoy it that much. He drove really fast, and every time he got close to the rocks, I thought we were going to smash right into them. He also did a bunch of 360 spins, and we got hit with freezing water. It was really, really fun, especially for something that was included in the tour.

Ketan was leaving the tour right after the boat ride, so we all said bye to him. I didn't want to let him go. But we had to leave to get to the bungyyy! Everyone came to the Kawarau Bridge Bungy, whether they were jumping or not. I wanted to do one bungy, and I chose this one because this was the site of the first commercial bungy.

When I got to the top of the bridge, they wrapped towels around my ankles and then wrapped a cord around the towels. The guy wrapping my feet up asked me where I was from, and then he said "Ohio? So, all you do is frolic through cornfields all the time?" It was funny. Our tour's day song came on while I was up there, so that made it extra cool. It's awesome that I get to have the day song on my DVD.

After skydiving, I wasn't really scared of the bungy. As I first started to fall, there were a couple seconds that felt like when you're walking down the stairs and you miss a step, like "omg, there's nothing to grab onto." But after that, it was just bouncy and fun. My hoodie kept flying up (or down, I guess?), so I kept trying to hold onto my hoodie with one hand as I was bouncing. Then I had to use two hands to grab onto the pole and not-so-gracefully fell into the boat. It was really fun! The walk back up to the top wasn't as much fun, though.

Once I finally made it back up to the top, I bought my photos and DVD and picked up my free t-shirt. Before we left, I had to say goodbye to Robin, Mark, Chris, and Crystal. That was pretty hard. Then, on the way to Dunedin, we stopped in Arrowtown, which was another location where they filmed The Lord of the Rings. We also stopped in another town where I got Subway, and they had cool trees.

When we got to Dunedin, we just killed a little bit of time and then went for our included tour of the Speight's Brewery. The tour included half an hour of drinking as much as you want from their taps, so that was a waste for me. Although they did have some good juice for me, Jo, and Mo. Then we walked over to the restaurant for the optional dinner (that almost everyone signed up for). For dinner, I had a GIANT plate of garlic bread that I couldn't even finish and then a lamb shank with mashed potatoes. It was pretty good.

After dinner, some people (including Jessie) were doing a ghost tour. Kay-Marie and I caught a cab with Brittany and Jack and went back to the hotel. We drank hot chocolate and watched TV while we waited for Jessie to get back from her ghost walk. Then we gave up on waiting and tried to go to sleep, and she got back pretty soon after that. There was a streetlight right outside our window that lit up our whole room, so at least she didn't have to get ready for bed in the dark.

Another Bungy Video
Jessie got a video of me, too. She turns the camera halfway through, so I wasn't sure which way to put it. I mostly just like this one because I can actually hear all the Contiki people, which I totally didn't hear while I was up there.

My Reaction to the Bungy
Jessie conducted a very short interview once I finally climbed back up the hill, haha.

Apparently this scene (where Arwen rescues Frodo and then makes the river rise up to get away from the dark riders) was filmed in Arrowtown, which is where we stopped along the way today. (© Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema)
